In the pursuit of making our lives more meaningful and purpose-driven, the Japanese have consistently led the way with innovative solutions. One such concept is the Miyawaki Method, which focuses on creating dense green forests within urban areas. This approach has become a boon during times of environmental crisis, and its implementation holds the potential to mitigate significant ecological challenges. Recognizing the importance of preserving our environment, District Governor Ln. Hemantraj Sethia initiated the Miyawaki project as a proactive response to the scarcity of open spaces and the need for clean air in Mumbai.

Addressing Environmental Challenges:
The city of Mumbai, like many other urban areas, has been grappling with diminishing open spaces and increasing pollution due to haphazard development. To ensure a sustainable future for our current and upcoming generations, it is crucial that trees are given adequate space and an enabling environment to thrive. The Miyawaki Method offers a solution, enabling the growth of a higher density of plants in a limited area compared to traditional methods. In just 1,000 square feet, we can cultivate approximately 750-800 plants, providing numerous benefits such as temperature reduction and water conservation.

The First Project: A Symbol of Change:
On July 1st, 2022, the first Miyawaki project of the Lionistic year was executed at an industrial park in Chakala, Andheri, one of Mumbai's busiest commercial areas. The initiative received a free land area of 2,500 square feet, where 1,750-1,800 plants were planted with soil irrigation facilities. The total cost of the project, including maintenance for two years, amounted to approximately Rs 300,000. This project not only brings relief and positive impacts to the lives of local workers and laborers but also contributes to the beautification of the area and enhances the image of Lions Club.

Expanding Impact and Future Plans:
With the successful execution of four Miyawaki drives out of the targeted five for this year, the project has gained momentum. The remaining drive is scheduled for June, during the rainy season, further emphasizing our commitment to environmental preservation. As we believe in creating long-term impacts, the Miyawaki Method will continue to be a permanent project of the district, ensuring sustained green spaces and environmental benefits.

Acknowledging Our Sponsors and Achievements:
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors who have supported our initial Miyawaki project. Their contributions have enabled us to impact lives at low costs, creating a positive ripple effect within the community. Through this initiative, we have not only achieved significant milestones but also reinforced Lions Club's commitment to environmental sustainability and the well-being of our city.

The Miyawaki Method serves as a powerful tool in addressing environmental challenges and reimagining urban spaces as havens of greenery. In Mumbai, where open spaces are scarce and pollution is a growing concern, this initiative holds immense value. By adopting innovative approaches and collaborating with stakeholders, Lions Club has set a precedent for the transformation of industrial areas into vibrant, eco-friendly spaces. As we continue to prioritize environmental focus projects, the Miyawaki Method will serve as a beacon of hope for a greener, healthier future in Mumbai and beyond.
