In a significant effort to support the healthcare system and cater to the needs of patients, Lions International District 3232 F2 took the initiative to establish a blood bank in Vapi. With the nearest blood bank located 120 kilometres away in Mumbai, this endeavour aimed to bridge the critical gap in blood supply, particularly for accident victims. Let's delve into the journey of Lions Blood Bank and its tremendous impact on the community.

The Genesis of Lions Blood Bank:
In the year 2000, Lions members recognized the urgent need for a blood bank in Vapi and rallied together to make it a reality. Generous donors and the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation provided the necessary resources, including free land, to support this noble cause. With all the required government approvals in place, the Lions Blood Bank started its operations during the 2000-2001 period.

Addressing the Blood Shortage:
From its inception, Lions Blood Bank has been instrumental in alleviating the shortage of blood supply in Vapi and its surrounding areas. Through the selfless contribution of voluntary donors, the blood bank collects an average of 350 to 400 units of blood per month. These life-saving units are then supplied to local hospitals at rates lower than the government-approved charges.

Upgrading Lions Blood Bank:
In 2014-2015, the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) provided a grant of $75,000 to enhance the facilities at the blood bank. This generous support enabled the establishment of blood compound separation facilities, allowing the blood bank to provide whole blood or blood components as per the specific requirements of patients. As a result of these improvements, the Lions Blood Bank has become one of the most vital and relevant projects in the service of the community.

Catering to the Region's Needs:
The significance of Lions Blood Bank is further highlighted by the heavy traffic and frequent accidents along National Highway 48, connecting Mumbai to Ahmedabad. Vapi, being an industrial area, witnesses a higher incidence of accidents, particularly during the monsoon season. Recognizing this pressing need, Lions members took decisive action to establish the blood bank in Vapi. Today, the blood bank arranges approximately 750 to 1,500 blood units every month, ensuring a steady supply of blood for those in critical need.

The establishment of Lions Blood Bank in Vapi by Lions International District 3232 F2 stands as a testament to the compassion and dedication of its members. Their efforts have not only saved countless lives but also provided a lifeline to accident victims and patients in need of blood transfusions. This noble initiative continues to thrive and make a significant difference in the community, underscoring the enduring impact of Lions Clubs International and its commitment to serving humanity.
