In an effort to promote the safe disposal of electronic gadgets, Lions of India launched a 30-day national drive to collect e-waste. The response on the first day was overwhelming, with tonnes of e-waste collected from various parts of the country. This initiative has opened new possibilities for dealing with unused electronic items, shedding light on the importance of responsible e-waste management.

Expanding the Scope of Donation:
As a Lion, I have always advocated the donation of items that we no longer use to those in need. However, my focus was primarily on clothes, books, utensils, and other essentials. The ongoing nationwide drive by Lions of India to collect and dispose of e-waste has broadened my perspective on unused items and their potential for donation.

Nationwide Participation:
The call for action resonated with over 40 Lions Districts and numerous Lions clubs across India. Lions members and the general public responded enthusiastically, contributing laptops, televisions, mobile phones, audio and video systems, cameras, cables, and various other electronic equipment. The magnitude and novelty of this drive have already created ripples across the nation.

The Journey Ahead:
The e-waste collection drive, scheduled to continue until February 13, aims to reach smaller towns, villages, colonies, apartments, and streets. All collected e-waste will be promptly transported to identified local warehouses, where it will then be sorted, processed, detoxified, dismantled, and scientifically disposed of. This meticulous approach ensures that the e-waste is handled responsibly and does not harm the environment.

Championing Environmental Responsibility:
Past International Director Sangeeta Jatia, along with a dedicated team from across the nation, is leading the charge in spearheading this drive. By addressing the issue of e-waste, Lions of India are furthering one of the five global focus areas of Lions Clubs International – Environment. In addition to the environment, the organization also focuses on Vision, Diabetes, Hunger, and Childhood Cancer as areas for collective action.

The national e-waste collection drive initiated by Lions of India marks a significant step toward responsible electronic waste management. The enthusiastic participation and support from Lions members and the general public reflect the growing awareness of the importance of proper e-waste disposal. As Lions continue to champion environmental responsibility, this initiative serves as a testament to their dedication to creating a better and sustainable future.
