Lion Jayanti Mallik

Since its establishment in 1960, the Lions Club of Raniganj, located in District 322C3, has been tirelessly working to provide life-changing cataract surgeries to those in need. Over the past 62 years, they have successfully performed over 100,000 cataract operations, with a significant percentage of these surgeries being provided free of charge to the poorest members of society. Through their unwavering dedication, the club has brought light to the lives of countless individuals, transforming darkness into renewed hope and vision. Today, we delve into the remarkable journey of the Lions Club of Raniganj and the impact they continue to make in their community.

From Tents to a Dedicated Eye Hospital:

The Lions Club of Raniganj, one of the oldest clubs in district 322C3, initiated their Annual Free Eye Operation Camp from the club's inception. In the early days, surgeries were conducted in makeshift tents, with the club performing an impressive 1,000 to 1,200 cataract operations during these camps. Such dedication and service caught the attention of Lions International, with the visit of 3rd International Vice President A P Singh to one of these camps leaving him awestruck by the magnitude of the club's efforts.

A New Era: Lions M J M Eye Hospital:

On July 28, 1979, the Lions Club of Raniganj inaugurated the Lions M J M Eye Hospital. Initially equipped with outdoor facilities on a 2.37-acre piece of land, the hospital began offering ECCE surgeries with stitches in 1980, followed by IOL surgery in 1990 and SICS surgery shortly after. In 1992, the hospital attended a man-power up-gradation workshop at the renowned Arvind Eye Care Institute in Madurai, further enhancing its capabilities. The introduction of PHACO surgeries in 1993 marked a significant milestone in their journey.

A Beacon of Excellence and Growth:

Today, the Raniganj Lions M J M Eye Hospital stands tall as a 4-story, 25,000 sq. ft. building, surrounded by lush green lawns and beautifully landscaped gardens, providing patients with a serene and welcoming environment. The hospital has achieved NABH accreditation and houses 30 beds, with a dedicated team of 50 staff members, including five eye surgeons and four optometrists. To better serve its patients, the hospital has incorporated modern equipment, established a Fair Price Medicine Counter, a Spectacle Counter, and even a Canteen facility. Cashless insurance options are available, ensuring accessibility for all. The hospital also operates five vision centres, extending its services to various locations.

Expanding Services: A Diabetic Hospital and Telemedicine:

Responding to the evolving needs of the community, the Lions Club of Raniganj has embarked on a new venture: the construction of a full-fledged Diabetes Hospital adjacent to the Eye Hospital. This facility aims to provide modern and comprehensive care for diabetic patients, with plans to start the Diabetic OPD soon. Additionally, the club intends to launch a Telemedicine service, utilizing technology to reach patients in remote areas and provide timely medical advice and support.

Aiding Their Mission: Support from Lions Clubs International Foundation:

The Lions Club of Raniganj has received significant support from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) through five grants, amounting to a total of US$ 199,194. This invaluable assistance has enabled the Raniganj Eye Hospital to reach new heights, expand its services, and continue its mission of restoring vision and transforming lives.

Through their Annual Free Eye Operation Camps, the establishment of the Lions M J M Eye Hospital, and their unwavering commitment to excellence, they have improved the lives of countless individuals by restoring their vision.
